The water lights up when you touch it.
One of only a handful of bright bioluminescent bays left on earth glows in Fajardo, an hour from Old San Juan. Paddle out on a moonless night and every stroke flares electric blue, fish trailing sparks under the kayak. The trick is going on a dark-sky night, and the good operators book to the tide charts.
Sip the island, then eat it.
Casa Bacardí is a short ferry across the bay; the smaller Barrilito stills sit up in the hills. Pair either with a mofongo crawl through Old San Juan’s kitchens and you have the tastiest afternoon the city sells.

Snorkel a reef thick with green turtles, sail the bay as the sky goes pink, or paddle a clear-bottom kayak across the Condado Lagoon. Warm water, easy days, and a boat under you for most of them.

El Morro has guarded the harbour mouth since the 1500s, its sentry boxes leaning out over the surf. Behind it run blue cobblestones the Spanish shipped over as ballast, cats asleep on the fort lawns, salsa drifting from open doorways at dusk. A good guide turns the plaques into stories worth hearing.
